READING PASSAGE 3 00:00

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27-40, which are based on Reading Passage 3 below.

The Origin of Language

The origin of language has been a major area of my research for many years. By 1859, when British scientist Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, there was already a great deal of interest in this subject. However, the debate became plagued by strange theories, so much so that in 1866 the influential Societe de Linguistique de Paris banned all discussions about the origin of language. The ban lasted for more than a century, before a surge of research began during the 1990s. Linguists, psychologists, anthropologists and archaeologists now frequently debate the origin of language and have published many articles and books on this topic. And yet, despite almost frenzied activity, limited progress has been made.

I believe there are four reasons for this. The first is an insufficient concern with the archaeological and fossil proof of the brains and behaviour of our human ancestors. Many theories to date rely on an assumed association between brain size and language abilities, without acknowledging the problem this creates: fossil evidence indicates that the Neanderthals had larger brains than modern humans, Homo sapiens, but archaeological evidence indicates that the Neanderthals lacked a capacity for language. So something is seriously amiss with those theories.

That 'something' might relate to the second reason for limited progress: insufficient concern with the other major aural and vocal communication system of modern humans: music. Even though the Societe de Linguistique de Paris had nothing to say about studying the origin of music, academics appear to have had a self- imposed ban, with limited discussion of this issue during the 19th and 20th centuries. However, there are notable exceptions that should be acknowledged. One is the aforementioned Charles Darwin who, in his 1871 book on human evolution, The Descent of Man, devoted several pages to the development of music. Another is the renowned ethnomusicologist John Blacking, whose 1973 book, How Musical is Man?, broached the idea that music is an inherent and universal human quality.

The origin of music deserves as much attention as that of language, as we cannot treat one without the other. Those writers who had evidently annoyed the Societe de Linguistique de Paris were quite aware of this. For them, music and language were intimately linked; the French writer and philosopher Jean- Jacques Rousseau's On the Origin of Language (1781) was a reflection on both music and language. In contrast, Morten Christiansen and Simon Kirby's book, Language Evolution (2000), which they conceived as 'a definitive book on the subject', failed to mention music in any of its 17 chapters. Those authors have an important lesson to learn from Rousseau and other writers of his time who addressed the origin of language.

Music is a universal feature of human society and plays a significant role in the lives of all individuals. Indeed, music is perhaps in even greater need of study than language: the latter has a self- evident function—the transmission of information—and can be readily accepted as a product of evolution, even if its specific evolutionary history remains unclear. But what is the point of music?

That question leads directly to a third reason for our lack of progress in understanding how language evolved, and indeed the human mind in general: an insufficient concern with emotion. If music is about anything, it is about expressing emotion. But while archaeologists have put significant effort into examining the intellectual capacities of our ancestors, their emotional lives have been sorely neglected. This has contributed to the neglect of music, which, in turn, has constrained our understanding of language.

There is one further reason why progress has been limited: those who have been most influential regarding the evolution of language have simply got it wrong, and misled everyone else. Linguist Derek Bickerton has made an important contribution towards our understanding of the origin of language by bringing his profound knowledge of linguistics to the discussions that have occurred. But Bickerton's idea that the precursor of modern language consisted of words strung together with limited, if any, grammar is, I believe, fundamentally mistaken. Bickerton refers to this precursor as 'proto- language' and suggests that it was similar to the type of language spoken by young children today, and mastered by apes through the use of computer keyboards. This idea has dominated the field of language origins for the last two decades, and is one that I once found persuasive. But I now understand that it is not only flawed but has severely limited the progress that should have been made.

My book therefore provides an alternative view, one that draws on the ideas of a linguist who has, I believe, identified the true nature of proto- language. Her name is Alison Wray. She argues that proto- language was 'holistic' rather than compositional in character. By this she means that the precursor to language was a communication system composed of 'messages' rather than words; each message was uniquely associated with an arbitrary meaning, as are the utterances of language today. But in Wray's proto- language, they were not composed out of smaller units of meaning (i.e. words) which could be combined together using a rule system (i.e. grammar) to make more complex messages with emergent meanings. For Wray, proto- language was semantically complex and grammatical. I believe this insight enables us to understand the origin of music as well as language, and to relate both to the emotional lives of our human ancestors.

Đến năm 1859, khi nhà khoa học Anh Charles Darwin xuất bản “Nguồn gốc các loài”, người ta đã rất quan tâm đến chủ đề này. Tuy nhiên, cuộc tranh luận bị các lý thuyết kỳ quặc quấy nhiễu, đến mức năm 1866, Hội Ngôn ngữ học Paris có ảnh hưởng đã cấm mọi thảo luận về nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ. Lệnh cấm này kéo dài hơn một thế kỷ, cho đến khi làn sóng nghiên cứu thập niên 1990 nổi lên. Các nhà ngôn ngữ học, nhà tâm lý học, nhà nhân loại học và nhà khảo cổ học nay thường tranh luận về nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ, và đã xuất bản lượng lớn bài viết, sách về chủ đề này. Tuy nhiên, dù hoạt động gần như điên cuồng, tiến triển lại rất hạn chế."},{"label":"Paragraph 2","text":"Tôi cho rằng có bốn nguyên nhân. Nguyên nhân thứ nhất là chú ý chưa đủ đến bằng chứng khảo cổ và hóa thạch về não và hành vi của tổ tiên loài người. Nhiều lý thuyết đến nay dựa vào mối liên hệ giả định giữa dung tích não và năng lực ngôn ngữ, mà không thừa nhận vấn đề điều này gây ra: bằng chứng hóa thạch cho thấy người Neanderthal có dung tích não lớn hơn người hiện đại (Homo sapiens), nhưng bằng chứng khảo cổ cho thấy người Neanderthal thiếu năng lực ngôn ngữ. Vì vậy, những lý thuyết đó có vấn đề nghiêm trọng."},{"label":"Paragraph 3","text":"“Vấn đề” đó có thể liên quan đến nguyên nhân thứ hai khiến tiến triển hạn chế: chú ý chưa đủ đến hệ thống giao tiếp thính giác và phát âm chính khác của con người hiện đại — âm nhạc. Dù Hội Ngôn ngữ học Paris không nhắc một chữ đến nghiên cứu nguồn gốc âm nhạc, các học giả dường như tự áp đặt một lệnh cấm, thảo luận vấn đề này ở thế kỷ 19 và 20 rất hạn chế. Tuy nhiên, có vài ngoại lệ đáng chú ý cần thừa nhận. Một là Charles Darwin đã nhắc đến, trong tác phẩm về tiến hóa loài người năm 1871 “Sự hình thành của con người”, ông dành vài trang bàn về sự phát triển của âm nhạc. Một người khác là nhà dân tộc học âm nhạc nổi tiếng John Blacking, trong tác phẩm năm 1973 “How Musical Is Man?”, ông đề xuất quan điểm âm nhạc là một phẩm chất bẩm sinh, phổ quát của con người."},{"label":"Paragraph 4","text":"Nguồn gốc của âm nhạc đáng được chú ý ngang nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ, vì chúng ta không thể tách một cái để nghiên cứu cái kia. Những nhà văn rõ ràng làm Hội Ngôn ngữ học Paris phật ý đều hiểu rõ điều này. Với họ, âm nhạc và ngôn ngữ gắn chặt; “Essai sur l’origine des langues” (1781) của nhà văn kiêm triết gia Pháp Jean-Jacques Rousseau là suy tư về cả âm nhạc và ngôn ngữ. Ngược lại, “Language Evolution” (2000) của Morten Christiansen và Simon Kirby — họ coi đó là “cuốn sách có tính quyết định về chủ đề này” — trong 17 chương không nhắc đến âm nhạc. Những tác giả này cần rút bài học quan trọng từ Rousseau và các nhà văn cùng thời bàn về nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ."},{"label":"Paragraph 5","text":"Âm nhạc là đặc điểm phổ biến của xã hội loài người, đóng vai trò quan trọng trong đời sống mọi cá nhân. Thực tế, âm nhạc có lẽ còn cần được nghiên cứu hơn ngôn ngữ: ngôn ngữ có một chức năng không cần giải thích — truyền thông tin — và có thể dễ dàng được chấp nhận là sản phẩm của tiến hóa, dù lịch sử tiến hóa cụ thể của nó vẫn chưa rõ. Nhưng ý nghĩa của âm nhạc là gì?"},{"label":"Paragraph 6","text":"Câu hỏi này trực tiếp dẫn đến nguyên nhân thứ ba khiến chúng ta thiếu tiến triển trong hiểu ngôn ngữ tiến hóa thế nào — thực tế là hiểu tâm trí con người thế nào: chú ý chưa đủ đến cảm xúc. Nếu âm nhạc nói về điều gì, thì là biểu đạt cảm xúc. Nhưng, dù các nhà khảo cổ dốc nhiều sức nghiên cứu năng lực trí tuệ của tổ tiên chúng ta, đời sống cảm xúc của họ lại bị bỏ qua nghiêm trọng. Điều này dẫn đến việc bỏ qua âm nhạc, từ đó hạn chế hiểu biết của chúng ta về ngôn ngữ."},{"label":"Paragraph 7","text":"Còn một nguyên nhân nữa khiến tiến triển hạn chế: những người có ảnh hưởng nhất về tiến hóa ngôn ngữ đã nghĩ hoàn toàn sai, và đánh lạc hướng mọi người khác. Nhà ngôn ngữ học Derek Bickerton đã đóng góp quan trọng cho hiểu biết của chúng ta về nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ, bằng cách đưa kiến thức ngôn ngữ học sâu sắc của ông vào thảo luận liên quan. Nhưng quan điểm của Bickerton rằng tiền thân của ngôn ngữ hiện đại gồm các từ xâu lại với ngữ pháp hạn chế (nếu có), tôi cho là sai từ căn bản. Bickerton gọi tiền thân này là “tiền ngôn ngữ (protolanguage)”, và cho rằng nó giống loại ngôn ngữ trẻ nhỏ nói ngày nay, và ngôn ngữ vượn hình người nắm được qua bàn phím máy tính. Quan điểm này hai mươi năm qua thống trị lĩnh vực nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ, và tôi từng cũng thấy nó rất thuyết phục. Nhưng nay tôi nhận ra, nó không chỉ có khuyết điểm, mà còn hạn chế nghiêm trọng tiến triển lẽ ra có thể đạt được."},{"label":"Paragraph 8","text":"Vì vậy, cuốn sách của tôi đưa một quan điểm thay thế, quan điểm này mượn ý tưởng của một nhà ngôn ngữ học — tôi cho rằng bà đã nhận diện được bản chất thật của tiền ngôn ngữ. Tên bà là Alison Wray. Bà cho rằng tiền ngôn ngữ là “toàn thể” chứ không phải “tổ hợp”. Ý bà là, tiền thân của ngôn ngữ là một hệ thống giao tiếp gồm “thông điệp” chứ không phải từ; mỗi thông điệp gắn duy nhất với một nghĩa tùy ý, như phát ngôn trong ngôn ngữ ngày nay. Nhưng trong tiền ngôn ngữ của Wray, chúng không gồm các đơn vị nghĩa nhỏ hơn (tức từ), những đơn vị này không thể qua hệ thống quy tắc (tức ngữ pháp) kết hợp lại để tạo thông điệp phức tạp hơn có nghĩa nảy sinh. Với Wray, tiền ngôn ngữ phức tạp về ngữ nghĩa, có cấu trúc về ngữ pháp. Tôi cho rằng nhận định này cho phép chúng ta hiểu nguồn gốc của âm nhạc và ngôn ngữ, và nối cả hai với đời sống cảm xúc của tổ tiên loài người."}],"questionExplanations":[{"sectionTitle":"Lời giải từng câu","items":[{"questionNumber":27,"text":"(1) Câu 27: In the first paragraph, what does the writer suggest about the origin of language?\nDịch đề: Ở đoạn đầu, tác giả gợi ý điều gì về nghiên cứu nguồn gốc ngôn ngữ?\nĐáp án: C（The lack of progress is surprising given the amount of work being done.）\nĐịnh vị: bài chính đoạn 1, câu cuối\nBản gốc: And yet, despite almost frenzied activity, limited progress has been made.\nBản dịch: Tuy nhiên, dù hoạt động nghiên cứu gần như điên cuồng, tiến triển đạt được lại rất hạn chế.\n\nGiải thích: despite tạo đối lập rõ giữa “nhiều hoạt động nghiên cứu” và “tiến triển hạn chế”, nên tác giả cho rằng đầu tư nhiều mà tiến triển ít, chọn C."},{"questionNumber":28,"text":"(2) Câu 28: What is the ‘problem’ referred to in the second paragraph?\nDịch đề: “problem” ở đoạn hai cụ thể chỉ điều gì?\nĐáp án: A（Some current theories are based on conflicting evidence.）\nĐịnh vị: bài chính đoạn 2, nửa sau\nBản gốc: fossil evidence indicates that the Neanderthals had larger brains than modern humans, Homo sapiens, but archaeological evidence indicates that the Neanderthals lacked a capacity for language.\nBản dịch: Bằng chứng hóa thạch cho thấy người Neanderthal có dung tích não lớn hơn người hiện đại Homo sapiens, nhưng bằng chứng khảo cổ lại cho thấy người Neanderthal thiếu năng lực ngôn ngữ.\n\nGiải thích: Nhiều lý thuyết nối thẳng dung tích não với năng lực ngôn ngữ;
